This little oasis of tranquillity is located about two hours' walk from the Naturhotel Rainer, at an altitude of 1,642 metres a.s.l. It is our dairy hut, the Ontrattalm. There is no mobile phone reception here, but the nature experience is unforgettable.

Once you reach the top, get rid of your shoes. As soon as your bare feet touch the ground, you will experience an almost forgotten sensation: the tickle of grass and uneven ground on the soles of your feet, as the scent of herbs and flowers fills your nose and your ears pick up the roar of a nearby mountain stream. Close your eyes, take a deep breath and feel a smile appear on your lips. After opening your eyes again, turn 360 degrees and take in the mountain panorama. Life is beautiful. You are exactly where you are supposed to be. And... did someone say barbecue?

Mountain hiking with Hans Rainer

Green alpine meadow with mountain stream and snow-capped peaks of Stubai Alps

Yes, someone said barbecue. It was Hans Rainer, our senior manager. Every week we organise a guided hike from our Naturhotel to the Ontrattalm. Once there, you can enjoy homemade sausages and local meat in the unique alpine landscape, according to South Tyrolean tradition. Of course, all topped off with a digestive grappa.

Adolf Rainer, Hans Rainer's father, bought part of the Ontrattalm as early as 1952. Another part, the so-called 'Obereggerkaser', was bought in 1982 by Hans Rainer.

Alpine farming has a long tradition in South Tyrol. High-altitude meadows have always been mown for hay or used for cattle grazing. Today there are about 1,500 dairy huts, one of which is the Ontrattalm, located on the mountain of the same name in the municipality of Racines, in Val di Giovo. Huts have existed on this mountain for more than 100 years and were once inhabited during the summer by shepherds, cheesemakers and dairymen who processed the milk from the cows into butter and cheese.

Families and their children can now admire and pet our cows, horses, goats and pigs in the open air.
